What’s on your roof?

My ‘unscientific’ estimation is that when most people think of roofing options for their log home, composite (shingles), cedar shake or metal roofing are their only considerations. We might be missing something…

In days gone by, slate was one of the most popular roofing materials in America. There were slate quarries in many parts of our country, but only a handful are still in operation. I was recently introduced to the Slate Roofing Contractors Assn. of North America (SRCA). Their purpose is to provide the public with access to reputable slate roofing professionals and to advance the slate roofing trade. Their website is really worth a visit. I learned more about slate roofing in 10 minutes than I learned in my entire life.

If you are in the planning stages of your log or timberframe home, take a few minutes and learn about this old roofing option. I’ve always loved the look of a slate roof, but honestly never considered is. I mean… Home Depot doesn’t carry it, so it must not be popular. Right!
