Although
timberframing is related to log home construction, it is not the
same building method. The similarities of exposed large or heavy timbers
is analogous, but the process of erecting and joining wood is
much different. Timbers are as a rule,
mortised together
with pegs acting as fasteners to lock the beams in place. Logs
are stacked and angles or corners are joined in a number of
different ways from dovetails and notches to coped recesses.
In traditional timberframing structures, the space between the timbers were filled with wattle-and-daub, or brick or rubble and plaster applied on the faces of both the inside and exterior walls. Wainscoting was often added for additional insulation. This look is known as a "half-timbered" style.
Timber framing in actionThis video shows how a timber frame section is built. A timber frame structure can be erected quickly, where a log building can take much longer. Assembly onsite is rapid because the pre-fitting of the frame is often laid out and assembled before being sent to the job site. Because of this an average timber frame shell can be erected in a matter of days and the entire building ready for dry-in a week or two. |
The art of timber framing has experienced a remarkable rebirth in the past few years as the demand for quality and unique housing continues to increase. New timber frame companies have risen to meet the demand. When considering such a home for yourself, do your homework... research the timberframe companies in our directory and ask questions.
From TimberFrame.org - Timber framing is a centuries-old craft. Using its most traditional definition, timber framing is a specific type of post and beam construction in which a frame is created from solid wood timbers that are connected with wooden, furniture-like joinery secured with hardwood pegs. The frame is covered with any of a number of enclosure systems. Normally the timbers remain exposed to the interior of the building. Visit TimberFrame.org

Timber Frame Business Council
established in October 1995, the Timber Frame Business Council (TFBC)
was created as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to
strengthening the timber frame industry. The Council grew out of the
Timber Framers Guild of North America, which was founded ten years
earlier.
