According to a recent consumer study, log homes are one of the fastest growing segments of the building industry. Log home sales have more than doubled since 1995, and the Log Homes Council of the National Association of Home Builders states that most of these homes are the owner's principal residence.
Eldorado, Ontario (PRWeb) December 4, 2006 -- Baby boomers have
influenced every aspect of life in the second part of the
twentieth century, and will continue to play a huge role in
determining trends in the new millennium.
More than forty years ago, baby boomers were responsible for
kick-starting the renaissance of the log home. In the late
1960's, log home resurgence began with the whole hippie era
"back to the earth" movement. Small and simple do-it-yourself
kits were marketed to urban refugees and people wanting to move
"back to the land". These log home and cabin kits were
relatively inexpensive to purchase and uncomplicated in design
so that they could be erected by the owner without the high
costs of a construction crew. Although technologically superior
to the log cabins built by the pioneers, this secondary wave of
log structures were ecstatically reminiscent of the log cabins
of old, due to their simplicity of design and modest amenities.
For many, the "live on the land" and "back to the earth"
movement was short lived. Many gave up and returned to the urban
centers to find work and live in more conventional housing while
the log cabins were relegated to vacation home status.
Since log homes continued to hold a place in the hearts of many
boomers, a new boom favoring log home buildings has been fueled
since the start of the new millennium.
According to a recent consumer study, log homes are one of the
fastest growing segments of the building industry. Log home
sales have more than doubled since 1995, and the Log Homes
Council of the National Association of Home Builders states that
most of these homes are the owner's principal residence.
Log home plans are no longer the simply designed cabin of the
sixties; today's modern log home may incorporate many different
architectural styles and can follow almost any floor plan. The
log home of today is typically over 2,000 sq. ft. of living
space with two or more bathrooms and may contain every
conceivable option and upgrade such as gourmet kitchens,
balconies, whirlpool tubs and walls of windows etc.
The baby boomers truly have inspired a new boom as they become
financially comfortable due to work and inheritance, and were
contemplating a return to a more peaceful way of life by the
1990's.
Studies have shown that, of the people who build or buy a log
home, the majority are professionals working in high-stress
positions, such as stockbrokers, police officers, or business
executives. They want out of the stress caused by their everyday
grind and are attracted to a home life of serenity and
relaxation. They are looking for the warmth and peacefulness of
a log home.
Mike Patterson of EZ Log Homes (http://www.ezloghomes.ca), a
well-known Canadian log home builder and kit manufacturer,
explains that, "much of the growing popularity of log
construction is due to its natural appeal and a growing
awareness of the many inherent benefits this type of housing
offers over more conventional homes."
Demand for log homes is up because an increasing number of
people are concerned about the environment and view log
construction as environmentally friendly and more sustainable
than conventional construction. Others simply like the idea of
living in a log home--preferring the warm ambiance that solid
wood walls create.
The demand for log homes is not about to decrease. With the
large baby boom generation poised to retire in the next decade,
many of them have indicated that they plan to choose a rural
setting for their retirement. Many baby boomers are seeking a
less hectic environment with quiet, peaceful and natural
surroundings. According to industry studies, many of these
boomers have longed to own a log home for a number of years.
With retirement, many will decide now is the time to fulfill
their dream. The log house construction boom will continue to
grow, not only because the baby boomers have the desire for log
homes, but because they also have the money to build them.
