Log Building Methodologies

Why Log & Timberframe?

If you are a first time visitor to our directory or are new to log and timber frame homes, you're in for a real treat. Logs and heavy timbers used in home construction are special - and create an atmosphere unlike any other building products. The best way I know how to introduce one to the splendor of logs is to point you to an article I wrote about this very subject entitled, "The Norman Rockwell Effect".

Logs for home construction can be round, D-shaped or squared. They may be machined to interlock with each other, stacked one atop of the other and cut (coped, or Swedish cope) to fit its corresponding mate, or they can be irregular and "chinked" for a snug and weather tight fit. Log siding is also a popular way of making a stick-built house look like a real log cabin. Another facet of log-style construction is a very old practice called timber framing...

Timberframing

Timberframe (or timber frame) is one of the oldest traditions of constructing wooden structures. Just like fine furniture uses dovetails, mortise and tenons and old-world joinery, timber framing is a sophisticated method of "post and beam" joinery. This art form dates back to early Grecian times and remained the principal method of building construction until the advent of "stick framing" in the mid-eighteenth century.

Modern craftsman continue to use this form of timberframe construction, employing a complicated system of joinery methods as an alternative to metal fasteners creating timberframed homes, barns, shops and churches. Why we created this directory

The vast majority of log home builders and dealers are small companies who spend their time doing what they do best, not designing high-impact websites. Unfortunately, Internet marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) is fast becoming a science; thus making most small firms struggle to attract traffic to their websites. Consequently, those sites don't always rank well in search engines.

This directory was begun as a result of the popularity of our first "rustic" directory, the Log and Rustic Furniture Directory. Over time we discovered two important correlations... One, people looking for rustic and log furniture oftentimes were furnishing (or planning to decorate) log homes and cabins. Secondly, those log home companies shared the same challenge of balancing new technology demands against their core business necessities.
