Identity Theft

Today I want to talk about something that has absolutely no relationship to the topic of this blog – but don’t click away yet. This is important.

I discovered a virus on my computer over the weekend. Understand that my home network is very secure; our computers sit behind a router and firewall and my virus scanner is up-to-date. How it happened… I haven’t a clue. How – doesn’t matter, what concerned me was that this particular “Trojan” virus was one that recorded keystrokes and supposedly emailed the data (to the bad guys) when you accessed a financial institution.

Priority #1 was cleaning the machine and my external back-up. Priority #2 was to act on a commercial I’ve seen recently about identity theft. Maybe you’ve seen it, or heard it on the radio… a company called LifeLock offers a $1,000,000 Guarantee that they will protect you against identity theft. To emphasize this, Todd Davis, the CEO of LifeLock posts his Social Security number on the front page of their website. That’s all the convincing I needed to read more about their services.

Basically, they promise that if your identity is stolen while you are a client, they will do whatever it takes to recover your good name. If you need lawyers, they will hire the best they can find. If you need investigators, accountants, case managers, whatever, they’re yours. If you lose money as a result of the theft, they will give it back to you.

Like many of you, I bank online, shop online and have given my Social Security number, credit card numbers and sensitive personal data to many institutions over the years. The scare I received from this weekend’s virus infection and the small monthly fee prompted me to secure my financial and personal information. I have to tell you that I felt instant relief once I signed up for their service.

We’ve all heard the horror stories of people’s lives being ruined when this happens. And, identity theft is not confined to online transactions…. anytime we use our credit card in a restaurant, retail store or gas station, we’re vulnerable. According to the FBI, its one of the fastest growing crimes in America. If you want to feel better about your future, take Paul Harvey’s advice and go look at Lifelock’s website.

Tomorrow we’ll get back to talking about log homes and log furniture (and hopefully you’ll still have an identity to make a purchase) 🙂
