Happy Memorial Day America

As a Vietnam Veteran, I was very pleased to see my fallen brethren honored at the dedication of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC on this day in 1982. Memorial Day means different things to people, from the official kick-off of the summer season to a solemn day of remembrance and honor, Memorial Day is a time to give thanks for the brave men and women who gave their lives in the cause of freedom. They died so that you and I could live our American Dream.

One reason log homes are popular today is that the humble log cabin played such a significant part in our nation’s history. Presidents, captains of industry and common people were born in log cabins. On this particular day in May of 1888, Jim Thorpe was born in a one-room log cabin in Indian Territory, now Oklahoma. Thorpe’s versatile talents earned him the distinction of being chosen as the greatest football player and the greatest American athlete of the first half of the twentieth century by American sports writers and broadcasters. Thorpe was the great-great-grandson of an Indian warrior and athlete, Chief Black Hawk, Thorpe’s heritage was Irish and five-eighths Indian (Sauk, Fox, and Pottowatomie).

The History Channel offers a very informative video about how Memorial Day came about. I highly recommend you take a few minutes and watch this Memorial Day video.
