Green Solutions Can Mean Green Savings!

In the log home industry, being ‘green‘ can mean a whole lot more than just ‘green building‘ products, methods or practices.  As an example, most major manufacturers are enthusiastically involved in reforestation projects and have an active role in organizations such as the Arbor Day Foundation and other earth-friendly groups.

One excellent example of incorporating a ‘green solution‘ to an everyday problem is how Estemerwalt Log Homes of Homesdale, PA uses sawdust to power a dry kiln system and it is a model of efficiency. The system burns green sawdust, which is fed into a primary burn chamber, starved of oxygen and converted into gas. The gas then passes into a chamber where it is ignited. The end result is an efficient and environmentally friendly means of heat for their kiln.

Naysayers will often take the position that green solutions are usually expensive and don’t translate in profitable ROIs for business.  Since installing their sawdust burning dry kiln system 12 years ago, Estemerwalt Log Homes has saved over one million gallons of fuel oil using a cost-effective and green system. With the recent skyrocketing prices of fossil fuels, Estemerwalt Log Homes is cheating OPEC and chuckling all the way to the bank.

A press release was issued about this today and you can read it in its entirety here.  If you know of other creative green solutions being used in the log home industry, add your comments below and share the news.  We’re all in this together and can learn from each other.

  • Alta Log Homes has quite a few initiatives for being green. They strictly follow Energy-Star guidelines and can integrate solar panels for cleaner energy (and lower bills!)

Also, they were the first log homes manufacturer to build a LEED Certified (by the Green Building Council) log home.
