Map/About/us

This is our "log cabin" in the woods. My bride and I moved to NW Montana in 2002. We both agree that there just isn't anything that can compare to a log home. Toss in a few cats, dogs and a healthy supply of local wildlife and we seldom feel the need to leave home.
the editor of the Log Home Directory™.
Like many of you, I have worn a lot of different hats in my 50+ years.
From delivering newspapers as a kid to VP of an international
corporation and along the way I even started a couple of Internet
ventures. Over the years I have been involved in sales, marketing, offline and
online retailing, computer programming and corporate management.
We live in a log home and
I build log furniture - but not commercially (my wife's "honey-do" list won't permit that).
Consequently, I know a little something about logs, in addition...
We pride ourselves in going far beyond what you will find with other reference sources. In addition to including reliable listings for architects and designers,
custom doors, windows,
flooring,
log stairs,
log siding,
railings, maintenance
and more, we offer thorough in-depth product/service descriptions and full contact information for all companies.
You will also discover fascinating information pertaining to the log home lifestyle. In fact, we are proud to mention that we were recently featured in Log Home Living magazine's 2009 Buyer's Edition (see our page).
Don't miss our special sections like 'green building' and our nationwide schedule of log home shows and events.
The vast majority of log home builders and dealers are small companies who spend their time doing what they do best, not designing high-impact websites. Unfortunately, Internet marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) is fast becoming a science; thus making most small firms struggle to attract traffic to their websites. Consequently, those sites don't always rank well in search engines.
This directory was begun as a result of the popularity of our first "rustic" directory, the Log and Rustic Furniture Directory. Over time we discovered two important correlations... One, people looking for rustic and log furniture oftentimes were furnishing (or planning to decorate) log homes and cabins. Secondly, those log home companies shared the same challenge of balancing new technology demands against their core business necessities.
This Log Home Directory™ is a human-edited listing, which is much more expedient and user friendly than any search engine. We accumulate our data by spending incalculable hours examining search engine results, city business listings, information banks, monitoring press releases, news alerts, Yellow Pages - and of course, getting submissions from companies wanting to be included. As a result...
In 1994, I co-founded one of the first ISPs in the United States, a company called PICnet. As a pioneer in the emerging Internet industry, we helped companies such as Frito-Lay, Texas Rangers MLB and Virgin Records develop their websites, but our major thrust was small businesses. In fact, I wrote one of the first books on the subject of doing business online, which was geared to that audience and it was aptly titled...
In 1998, Macmillan Publishing released our
Internet business book to wide acclaim. It was designed to help small
businesses create, set up and maintain their Website without having to invest significant time and money in the process. Written for those who didn't know how or where to begin. Unfortunately, it is hopelessly out of date (and out of print) today.
Search engine robots and the algorithms they utilize to catalog, rank and evaluate websites (for inclusion in their database) means that many of the best websites don't appear in many search engines. Or if they do, they are buried hundreds (or thousands) of listings deep. Why is this?
Search engines use highly sophisticated and automated technology to make a decision on a site's "value" by using predetermined conditions. Among their criteria...
The amount of traffic a site receives. Well, that leaves many of us out in the cold as we operate in such a narrow industry niche. Our goal is not oodles of traffic, but qualified, interested prospective buyers.
The numbers of sites that link "to" a particular site is also important. The thinking behind this is that if numerous sites link to XYZLogHome.com, it must be popular and offer great information. Don't confuse this with links "from" a site (your links page). That benefits the sites you link to - not your website.
Depth of content. Again, this eliminates most of us as our websites function more as a brochure, not necessarily jam-packed with related educational matter. As an example, few log home sites discuss the history of log home living, construction techniques, etc. in depth. The goal is to sell a home, not teach history.
These are just a few of the reasons why a human-edited directory is so much more useful than any generic web search. We have collected our data as a result of countless hours sifting through search engine data, city business listings, furniture directories, Yellow Pages - and of course, receiving submissions from vendors wishing to be included. As a result...
